Turkey resumed transit of sanctioned goods to Russia Vpost

The suspension occurred because Turkey uses a joint customs system with the EU, in which data on goods subject to restrictions have been updated.

  • Problems with the transit of European goods are over, VPost writes , citing employees in logistics companies. By March 14, customs release cargo by all modes of transport, they say.
  • On March 9, Kommersant wrote about the suspension of the transit of sanctioned goods from Turkey to Russia. A source told Bloomberg that the Turkish government asked to stop him because of the tightening of EU sanctions.
  • On March 10, VPost wrote that logistics companies began to receive notifications from Turkish partners about the suspension of transit for “technical reasons.” A few days later they promised to resume it. The BFM publication wrote that the matter was due to technical problems, and transit would be resumed on March 13. Giorgi Vlastopulo, CEO of the Optimalog logistics company, told BFM that some customs points began to let goods through as early as March 10.
  • According to VPost, the technical problems in question are related to the fact that Turkey is part of a single customs zone with the EU. Because of this, the country took time to update the transit system with new data on sanctioned goods from the February package of restrictions. The very process of supplying goods will not change, the interlocutors of the publication assure. Goods do not go directly to Russia – they are received by a Turkish company.
  • The president of Opora Rossii, Alexander Kalinin, also told AiF that they stopped registering transit cargo in Russia due to software updates for the customs system. According to him, this system is joint with the EU, therefore, after the new sanctions, Russia completely disappeared from it.
  • To clear goods to Russia, Turkish customs officers began to use their national system – but they did not quickly switch to it, because over the years of using the European version at customs, they “lost their skills” with this software, says Kalinin.
